Melanie Feilding was brought up for the first twelve years of her life in Kenya on a tea plantation. Her Grandfather had emigrated to East Africa in the 1920s and her mother and aunt were both born there. She had a idylic childhood, camping in game parks most weekends, when she wasn't at school, and having a happy carefree and out door life. Her parents left Kenya when she was twelve and she went to school in England, but travelled out in the holidays to visit her parents. Her father's next destination was Sumatra in Indonesia in the mid 1970s. Sumatra is the most beautiful Island, with wonderful forests, lakes and volcanos with hot springs. Then she moved on again to Peru, and lived in the valley next door to Machu Picchu. What a wonderful childhood.
Moving to London when she finished school she worked in retail, and after leaving her last job which was selling petrol contracts to petrol stations for a large international company, she moved to the beautiful Sussex Downs where Otta Designs was started.
She is passionate about having products made in England, and all her textiles are printed in England and made in Yorkshire by a family firm.
She now lives in rural Northamptonshire with her husband, daughter and two dogs.
